• Suggested Actions from WWRHAH: Would HPAC reps wish to attend the larger analysis meetings, and, does HPAC want to meet and coordinate with SDCG & WWRHAH on our Urban Village response no later than mid-July?

H-Line Metro – SDOT and Metro and the question of accountability to the community. Several neighborhood groups have reached out to SDOT regarding changes to existing 128 and 60 bus services and received conflicting messages.

• Suggested Actions from WWRHAH: Would HPAC like coordinate with WWRHAH and SDCG to request a meeting in the early fall with Metro to present the community’s overarching mass transit challenges, and provide community generated suggestions, and request Metro to pursue data that refutes what we are telling them.

Meet Yun Pitre, Community Engagement Coordinator, with the Department of Neighborhoods.
Yun will talk about the changes to the Neighborhood District Coordinator program as there are now four Community Engagement Coordinators acting as points of contact for the City. Yun assigned to neighborhoods south of I-90 and West Seattle (District 1 & 2).

Meet Cherry Liu, Family Engagement Specialist, Neighborhood House
Neighborhood House offers preschool, toddler, and home visiting programs through its Head Start, Early Head Start, and Parent Child Home programs.  The age ranges are 3-5 years for preschool, 2-3 years for toddler, and prenatal-3 years for early head start home visiting and 16-30 months for the Parent Child Home Program.  Cherry Liu is a Family Engagement Specialist with Neighborhood House and she will be available to provide information on these programs and answer any questions community members or providers might have about them.

Meet Zach Carstensen, Director, Outreach and Engagement, Office of Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-07)
Zach will be at HPAC to learn more about the community and understand the needs as well as answer questions about Congress member Jayapal’s work in Washington DC.

Community Walk Action Team Meeting

Thursday, May 4th, at the Highland Park Elementary School Library from 6:30 – 7:30 pm.

Find It, Fix It Walk Coming to Highland Park 
The Find It, Fix It Community Walks are a series of Mayor-led walks that help to improve neighborhoods one block at a time. During these walks, neighbors, police, and City officials walk together to identify physical elements in the neighborhood that make it feel unsafe or poorly maintained.

The Community Walk Action Team (CWAT) is a collection of community members, non-profit leaders, and business owners who live or work in a Find It, Fix It Community Walk neighborhood.

CWAT members help to:

• Inform City officials about neighborhood needs
• Plan the walk route
• Recruit neighbors, friends, and family to join the community walk
• Find additional outreach opportunities like neighborhood events and meetings

The time commitment involves a few weeknight meetings, as well as participation at your neighborhood’s walk (3-8 hours total over a span of 5 weeks). If you are interested in helping plan the Find It, Fix It Community Walk in your neighborhood, please contact Paige Madden at Paige.Madden@seattle.gov or at (206) 233-5166.

Apply for Community Project Grant

In partnership with Cities of Service, the City of Seattle is offering up to $3,000 in mini-grants for the 2017 Find It, Fix It Community Walks neighborhoods to support community-led revitalization and beautification projects.

Join Mayor Murray for This Year’s  Find It, Fix It Community Walk

Mayor Ed Murray announced the six neighborhoods where he will host his annual Find It, Fix It Community Walks. Now in its fourth year, these walks bring City officials, business owners, and community members together to address each neighborhood’s needs.

Mayor Murray will lead the Find It, Fix It Community Walks in the following neighborhoods: Wallingford (Tuesday, March 14), Little Brook, Northgate, Highland Park, North Beacon Hill, and First Hill.

Join HPAC and your neighbors on the Community Walk Action Team

Each walk will follow a route determined by community members on Community Walk Action Teams convened by Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. Specific dates and locations will be announced at least two weeks prior to each walk. If you are interested in participating on a Community Walk Action Team to help plan the walk in one of the six neighborhoods, contact Lemmis Stephens, Find It, Fix It Program Coordinator, at Lemmis.Stephens@seattle.gov or call (206) 386-1907.

The City will continue to offer Community Project Grants for every walk. These grants provide support for community-led revitalization and beautification projects. In 2015 and 2016, 209 community volunteers, with assistance from City staff, completed 20 projects across the city.

Mayor Murray spearheaded the Find It, Fix It Community Walks in 2014 in partnership with Cities of Service, a national nonprofit that works with cities to provide support and training to encourage civic volunteerism.

Whether or not your neighborhood is part of this year’s walks, community members can report safety needs or city maintenance issues anytime with the Find It, Fix It mobile app. Android users can download the app from the Google Play Store and iPhone users can download it from the App Store.

Neighborhood Parks and Streets Fund – District 1 – Your Voice, Your Choice – Let’s Get Some Projects Moved Forward!

Dept of Neighborhoods has received over 870 projects citywide for Your Voice, Your Choice: Parks & Streets! For District 1 (all of West Seattle & South Park), without looking too far into the list and combining many of the duplicate submissions, there are 188 ideas.

HPAC is calling on all neighbors to learn more about or be involved in the next phase of Your Voice, Your Choice – the Project Development Teams. 

Sample of projects submitted from the Highland Park/Riverview/South Delridge Area include:

• Flashing beacon cross walk on Highland Parkway/9th Ave SW between SW Holden and SW Cloverdale Street
• Speed bumps SW Henderson St and 12th Ave SW in Highland Park
• Southern half of the heavily used Riverview Park trail, located at the junction of the ballfields and greenbelt needs to be maintained or paved
• Trail surface degraded along bluff in Riverview Park from ballfield access road to south edge of park.
• 19th Ave SW on the 5200 block. There are no sidewalks on most of the street.
• Speed bumps on 11th Ave SW and SW Portland St between SW Holden and SW Kenyon St
• For Westwood neighborhood/Urban village, there needs to be added safety measures for pedestrians
• Crosswalk improvements for Delridge Way SW & SW Findlay St

What happens during Project Development?

In March, there will be four 2-hour meetings scheduled within each council district (see dates below). Anyone is welcome to attend one or all four of these meetings within their council district.

In each meeting, there will be a set number of project ideas that meeting participants will be asked to review and evaluate based on need, impact, and equity within the district. These will be interactive meetings that evoke learning and discussion about needs in your district, and thoughtful consideration of projects’ benefits to your district. This is about helping to identify those projects that are going to serve the highest need and provide the most benefit for your district, not about advocating for the particular project that you may have submitted.

From City of Seattle:

Last month the city announced a plan to establish three additional sanctioned encampments to serve homeless people. That plan calls for sanctioning the current encampment at Myers Way (known as Camp 2nd Chance) and expanding it from 20 tents up to 50 tents. Sanctioned encampments are a temporary measure to provide people living without shelter a safer alternative place to live while caseworkers help them secure long-term stable housing. I have included the fact sheet and FAQs we distributed previously.

The City hosted a public meeting on December 8th to describe the plan and to listen to community concerns. The City is hosting a second public meeting on Wednesday, February 1st to provide further information and to address concerns that have been raised. We encourage you to attend.
