Greetings to all. We have decided to cancel our regular meeting scheduled for Wednesday this week to free up community time for some urgent, high interest events on the near horizon.
First we have word from SDOT that they are finally ready to share their design work on the Highland Park Way bicycle lane improvements with the community. This will be an online meeting open to all.
From our communications with the Highland Park Way SW Connection Project– “It’s definitely been a busy start to 2026! Thanks for checking in. We are actually in the middle of finalizing the details for an upcoming online public meeting. Our team is excited to speak with the community and share the latest project updates.” After which they posted this meeting on their website:
We will be hosting an online public meeting on March 4, 2026, from 5 PM – 6 PM to share these design updates with the community and answer questions.

We also have positive updates on HPAC outreach to multiple City Departments regarding vehicles illegally accessing the West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails over the past few weeks.
Our requests for immediate action:
1) Remove the abandoned vehicles and install eco blocks to create a barrier to future vehicle access into Duwamish Greenbelt from Highland Park Way, spacing the blocks to allow hiking and bicycle access.
COMPLETED! THANK YOU PARKS DEPARTMENT.

2) Block access to Duwamish Greenbelt from Riverview Playfields lower ball fields by installing boulders and or other landscape features to prevent driving around bollards on the upper Playfields.”
STARTED- THANK YOU PARKS DEPARTMENT. We will continue monitoring to be sure this is sufficient.
Thanks to community requests the City also has plans in place to clean up at least two big camp sites off this area at the Highland Park Way, E Marginal Way intersection area but needs to wait for some drier weather.
We are also monitoring communications from LIHI regarding the plans to locate a safe RV lot and tiny home village on the Glassyards Property near the bottom of Highland Park Way. They are working on a public information meeting also in early March. The West Seattle Blog is tracking this closely and we plan to be there when the meeting is finalized.
Also on the near horizon, this invitation from Seattle Police Department:
“You are invited to influence the Seattle Police Department’s safety approach for your neighborhood during our third “Our City, Our Safety” conversation of 2026!
On March 11, 2026, please join Seattle Chief of Police Shon Barnes and leaders from SPD’s Southwest Precinct to have a frank conversation about safety.
Please join us! Mark your calendar for 6:00-7:30pm at Southwest Teen Life Center (2801 SW Thistle St, Seattle, WA 98126) on March 11, 2026!
At Our City, Our Safety, you’ll be able voice your hopes and concerns about public safety in your neighborhood to help co-develop ways that we can do better – from upcoming community engagement programs to approaches to crime prevention.

And to end on a more positive note! HPIC and SPU are hosting another Free Compost Pickup and Seed Swap event at the HPIC Site, 1116 SW Holden, Saturday Feb. 28 from 10-2(or whenever we run out of the compost).
